SUMMARY:Uncanny Valley
DESCRIPTION:Enter the Uncanny Valley\, an unnerving place\, a place to explore computer generated people\, to transplant their faces onto your own and see humanity and the posthuman surrealism of snapchat through a computer’s eyes. Works generated by AI\, added to your face using AI to turn you into a computer human hybrid. \nJ Rosenbaum has trained their computer on tens of thousands of snapchat selfies and trained their computer to make its own. A surreal landscape grid of generated partially human faces. You are then given the opportunity to use snapchat to put the images back onto your own face and become part of the artwork\, share\, pose with friends and share the creepy\, cool and sometimes hilarious results. \nJ. Rosenbaum is a contemporary figurative artist working in 3D modeling\, artificial intelligence and artificial intelligence and exploring the intersection of technology and art. Their most recent work has been in exploring the nature of Non Binary transness and their own genders and sexuality. In 2019 they are continuing their research into computer perceptions of gender with their PhD at RMIT.

SUMMARY:Nuit Rose: Hidden Worlds
DESCRIPTION:What does gender look like when created by a machine? When given idealized figures from Greek and Roman statues how does a machine interpret them\, create its own? And how does an artist respond to that? These works are a collaboration between human and computer\, to create art where gender shifts and transforms\, where what we see on the surface is only skin deep. \nThis exhibition is interactive\, with an Augmented Reality application that can be downloaded at www.hiddenworlds.ml to transform the works on the wall. It incorporates sound\, narrative\, drawing and 3D modeling to create a unique display exploring gender beyond the binary and deep inside the world of computer vision. \nFor further information please visit Hidden Worlds

SUMMARY:Body of Knowledge
DESCRIPTION:Can computers see gender? Without being trained in traditional binary notions of gender what can they produce? And how do we interpret the results? J. Rosenbaum presents a paper on their project Hidden Worlds\, an exhibition of Artificial Intelligence Computer Generated artworks and mobile Augmented Reality technologies to see gender through the lens of computer vision. Rosenbaum’s last works used AI to interpret their creations\, this time the computer creates the art and Rosenbaum interprets the output. A Generative Adversarial Network that has been trained in thousands of images of Greek and Roman statuary worked for weeks to create its own. Rosenbaum then explored the output to find the truth inside the computer generated work and reveal that to the viewer. Another Neural Network looked at the works and wrote poetry based on what it saw through an image classifier. This is incorporated into a soundscape inside the app. Viewers will see light boxes and watch them come to life inside the app as the computer generated work is transformed and reinterpreted by human eyes and hands. The language is alien\, computer driven showing a collaborative effort between human and machine. This highly experimental work invites questions about computers creating art\, about how machines see humans and gender and idealized beauty. \nBoK2019 will generate questions that explore the dynamic between an organism and its surroundings\, by asking: How does art shift the way knowledge and thinking processes are acquired\, extended and distributed? How do cognitive theories offer ways to enact and change individual and collective ways of thinking? The aims of the first Body of Knowledge Art and Embodied Cognition Conference\, which was held at UC IRVINE in 2016 were to “bring together an interdisciplinary group including cognitive scientists\, neuroscientists\, philosophers of mind\, physiologists\, psychologists\, philosophers\, anthropologists\, computer scientists\, artists and designers to explore emerging cognitive neuroscience and theories of embodied cognition.”

SUMMARY:[Un]Natural
DESCRIPTION:A mixed media exploration of Naiads\, Dryads and Nereids from Greek and Roman mythology using augmented Reality\, 3D modeling and neural networks to create modern interpretations of classical creatures of nature. Using the highly technological with the highly natural invites discussion about how at odds we are to the natural world and how we might use technology to better connect with the environment and assist our planet\, that it need not be an either or thing but something to explore and evolve within ourselves. The creatures from mythology have long been a subject for painters and sculptors with a classical bent and the anthropomorphization of environmental concerns assists with the empathy towards the environment and its needs. By using machine learning and augmented reality through a mobile application interface I am seeking to grant the viewer an insight into a computers empathic reaction to our environment. \n\nOpening Saturday 5 May 2-4pm

SUMMARY:Beyond the Binary - Midsumma
DESCRIPTION:There is something delightful about people who are looking through their phones at my figures who are looking at their phones. A beautiful recursion of technology and engagement\, a new way of looking at the world. So often we see art and commentary complaining about the pervasiveness of the smart phone without exploring the beautiful ways it connects us all together\, without acknowledging the fact that we have the sum total of humanity’s knowledge at our fingertips. There are constant complaints about selfies and narcissism without exploring the very real benefit that selfies have in making us feel valid in our own skin\, especially when we cannot always control the way the world sees us. \nThese works are on the nature of non binary transness in a binary state. As so many of us live as non binary people on a gender spectrum in a world that insists on being blue or pink\, male or female I felt it was appropriate to explore this nature within a system that only sees things essentially as on or off\, 1 or 0. My work represents those of us who live in that spectrum\, outside the binary\, and often have difficulty fitting into the rigid societal norms so often enforced on us. \nMy work also explores the nature of passing and not passing as the gender you are. The complex nature of your internal monologue not matching your exterior and how\, if you are in a gender that changes regularly\, your body may or may not fit you at any time\, sometimes without warning. \nThe trapped in the wrong body narrative still persists. The idea that trans people can and will want to change their bodies is pervasive and trans people who cannot\, or do not\, wish to transition are underrepresented. This project shows people in varying stages of self-acceptance\, of exploring their bodies as they are\, unashamed. They are gods\, inspired by archaeological artifacts and classical art with a modern twist. they are a vision of acceptance and emergence. Showing that there is no wrong way to have a body. \nThese works use Machine Learning\, Augmented Reality\, and 3D modeling to explore these complex themes. SUMMARY:Beyond the Binary - Melbourne Fringe Festival
DESCRIPTION:Art History and Digital Art collide in this experimental Mixed Reality project by J. Rosenbaum. Inspired by classical art and ancient archaeological artifacts\, Rosenbaum uses Augmented Reality and Machine Learning to present works that move beyond the digital binary\, beyond the gender binary to show that we aren’t constrained by our programming. \nViewers will have the opportunity to explore these works at Testing Grounds over three days and watch the art and grounds come alive with traditional hung prints and 3D artworks that exist only within the digital plane. \nThe 3D works will be interactive and location aware. The markers are lightboxes with lasercut displays\, the sculptures appear through the recursion app. This work will expand on the work I have explored with Recursion and build further into location based works. \nBeyond the Binary will be Showing at Testing Grounds for Melbourne Fringe between September 20-22
