SUMMARY:Mixed Reality and Art
DESCRIPTION:This talk is about mixed reality technologies\, Virtual Reality\, Augmented Reality and how they can be beneficial to artists and exploring art in depth. I will go behind the code to the amazing things this technology currently does\, what it can reveal and how it is currently being used for good and for ill. I will also discuss how easy it is to get off track on your project\, as an artist or as a developer and what we need to bear in mind as we navigate the different streams of development and art \nI am an artist and a developer\, and will be pitching this talk for people who are interested in both or who would like a new way to look at existing technologies to see the potential beneath. I speak with the experience of someone who has developed my own Augmented Reality applications and used it to create award winning art. \nThis talk brings value in terms of looking at the way we currently approach technologies as to how we could be approaching them and is a light and fun introduction to mixed and immersive reality options.

SUMMARY:Hidden Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Can computers see gender? Without being trained in traditional binary notions of gender what can they produce? And how do we interpret the results? J. Rosenbaum is presenting Hidden Worlds\, an exhibition of Artificial Intelligence Computer Generated artworks using mobile Augmented Reality technologies to see gender through the lens of computer vision. Rosenbaum’s last works used AI to interpret their creations\, this time the computer will be creating the art and Rosenbaum will create interpretations based on the output. A Neural Network that has been trained in thousands of images of Greek and Roman statuary attempts to create its own. Rosenbaum will then take the output and seek to find the truth inside the computer generated work and reveal that to the viewer. Another Neural Network will look at the works and attempt to write poetry based on what it sees. This will be incorporated into a soundscape inside the app. Viewers will see light boxes and watch them come to life inside the app as the computer generated work is transformed and reinterpreted by human eyes and hands. The language will be alien\, computer driven showing a collaborative effort between human and machine. This highly experimental work invites questions about computers creating art\, about how machines see humans and gender and idealized beauty.\nHidden Worlds will be at Testing Grounds from September 12 to 22 as part of Critical Mass for Melbourne Fringe Festival. \nDates: September 12-22\nTimes: Open Wednesday to Saturday 10-6\nVenue: Testing Grounds- White Box. 1 City Rd\, Melbourne.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Binary - Midsumma
DESCRIPTION:There is something delightful about people who are looking through their phones at my figures who are looking at their phones. A beautiful recursion of technology and engagement\, a new way of looking at the world. So often we see art and commentary complaining about the pervasiveness of the smart phone without exploring the beautiful ways it connects us all together\, without acknowledging the fact that we have the sum total of humanity’s knowledge at our fingertips. There are constant complaints about selfies and narcissism without exploring the very real benefit that selfies have in making us feel valid in our own skin\, especially when we cannot always control the way the world sees us. \nThese works are on the nature of non binary transness in a binary state. As so many of us live as non binary people on a gender spectrum in a world that insists on being blue or pink\, male or female I felt it was appropriate to explore this nature within a system that only sees things essentially as on or off\, 1 or 0. My work represents those of us who live in that spectrum\, outside the binary\, and often have difficulty fitting into the rigid societal norms so often enforced on us. \nMy work also explores the nature of passing and not passing as the gender you are. The complex nature of your internal monologue not matching your exterior and how\, if you are in a gender that changes regularly\, your body may or may not fit you at any time\, sometimes without warning. \nThe trapped in the wrong body narrative still persists. The idea that trans people can and will want to change their bodies is pervasive and trans people who cannot\, or do not\, wish to transition are underrepresented. This project shows people in varying stages of self-acceptance\, of exploring their bodies as they are\, unashamed. They are gods\, inspired by archaeological artifacts and classical art with a modern twist. they are a vision of acceptance and emergence. Showing that there is no wrong way to have a body. \nThese works use Machine Learning\, Augmented Reality\, and 3D modeling to explore these complex themes. Inspired by classical art and ancient archaeological artifacts\, Rosenbaum uses Augmented Reality and Machine Learning to present works that move beyond the digital binary\, beyond the gender binary to show that we aren’t constrained by our programming. \nViewers will have the opportunity to explore these works at Testing Grounds over three days and watch the art and grounds come alive with traditional hung prints and 3D artworks that exist only within the digital plane. \nThe 3D works will be interactive and location aware. The markers are lightboxes with lasercut displays\, the sculptures appear through the recursion app. This work will expand on the work I have explored with Recursion and build further into location based works. \nBeyond the Binary will be Showing at Testing Grounds for Melbourne Fringe between September 20-22

SUMMARY:YOW Data - The Future of Art
DESCRIPTION:Most people are aware of the impact machine learning will have on jobs\, on the future of research and autonomous machines\, but few seem to be aware of the future role machine learning could play in the creative arts\, in visual art and music. What will art be like when artists and musicians routinely work collaboratively with machines to create new and interesting artworks? What can we learn from art created using neural networks and what can we create? From the frivolous to the beautiful what does art created by computers look like and where can it take us? \nThis talk will explore magenta in tensorflow and neural style in caffe\, google deep dream\, next Rembrandt\, and convolutional neural networks. I will look into some of the beautiful applications of machine learning in art and some of the ridiculous ones as well.

SUMMARY:ART-IFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: Creepy\, Frivolous And Beautiful Art Made With Machines
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of digital art looking at the history of some of the delightfully frivolous uses of machine learning and how it impacts the future of art. From paint samples to autonomous works I will explore the joys and horrors of machine learning for artistic purposes. I will also touch on the emotional impact of digital art including the uncanny valley\, puppyslugs and face app. \nBuzzConf slides 2017
